With the temperature being 2 degrees this morning, I think it is only fitting I write my review of A Killing Cold by Kate Alice Marshall. So, not often do I have the time to sit down and read an entire book in a day, but last Saturday I had the pleasure of doing just that. I opened this book up that morning with my coffee and got so completely hooked, I only took a short two-hour break to go to the gym. Our main character Theodora Scott is someone you have a lot of questions about. She grew up with her adoptive parents in Washington, and there is nothing she wants to share about that. There is a part of it she puts a lot of effort into hiding. Living in Los Angeles now, she meets Connor Dalton and is engaged to him within six months of knowing each other. Now she is meeting his entire family at their secluded cabin retreat, and what Connor doesn’t know is the messages she has started receiving to stay away from Connor. Connor’s sister seems to be her closest ally in the family. His grandmother is the most skeptical of Theo and her intentions with Connor. Theo starts to feel something off about their retreat, like she has been there before. She starts getting more and more flashbacks, then while exploring an abandoned cabin on the property she finds a picture of herself with a man at that very retreat. Once she knows without a doubt she has been there before her mind starts to unravel the mystery of her past. Where did her parents go? Why was she given up for adoption? And why is she in a picture with her fiancé, Connor’s, dad? This story is gripping, and you wait for a lull so you can put it down, but none ever come. It is nonstop cliffhangers that leave you pointing your finger at every single person. This story is well done and makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up. It is a great mix of thriller and mystery as you try to find answers to questions Theo has finally just remembered.
